Later, he heads to the limestone uplands of the White Peak, whose pure rivers and streams are home to the rare great crested newt and a master of disguise – the caddis fly.

Ray Mears continues his journey across Great Britain visiting some of nature’s finest habitats. In this episode, he explores the atmospheric lowland wetlands of Somerset in his canoe. He finds little egrets hunting and goes in search of food himself when he gathers reedmace pollen to make a tasty pancake. Ray also comes across a colony of young herons nesting in nearby woodland and takes a close look at the striking but ferocious emperor dragonfly, which has remained unchanged for 250 million years. The highlight of his trip is catching a glimpse of an otter gliding through the water at dusk.

In this episode, Ray heads to East Anglia to explore one of the UK’s least-known habitats – the Breckland. The area boasts the hottest summers and coldest winters in the country and is home to an abundance of exciting wildlife including brown hares, the rare stone curlew and the noisy pool frog, which until recently was extinct in Britain. Ray also ventures below ground to explore an ancient flint mine where he discovers a red deer antler that has been there since the Stone Age.
