On February 12, 2005, Robert Oliver Scribner, 21, of Calgary, Alta., fatally stabbed his girlfriend Cari Lynn Gaulton, 17, to death. The incident took place inside his father’s home. On the morning of the incident, Scribner — who was described by his lawyer David Andrews as ‘basically a good, sensitive and hard-working kid’ — was in despair because he suspected that Gaulton was cheating on him with one of his friends. Robert had a knife and was vaguely threatening to commit suicide. When she told him “to just do it,” he became enraged and in the heat of passion, turned the knife on her instead.
