During these difficult economic times, it is heartening to note that Britain’s 2.5million independent tradesmen are pumping £35billion into the economy. However, like everybody else, these white van men are also feeling the pinch.This revealing documentary series shows how some shrewd businessmen are using their vanbased operations to explore new moneymaking opportunities, often with surprising results. Van man Dan has tried his hand at many jobs, including those of pilot and stockbroker. However, when his consultancy firm went bust, he decided to start a white-van empire. He now has over 40 drivers on his books, and is hoping to eventually expand the business to 100 employees.
To secure his dream, he constantly buys up second-hand vans, often from his uncle Gordon, a used-car salesman. Gordon claims he has a bargain for Dan, but when the budding entrepreneur takes the latest lorry out for a test spin, he is less than impressed. “Is that the real mileage?” Dan asks incredulously after clocking the odometer. It is then time for the family members to haggle over the asking price. Will they be able to remember that blood is thicker than water?
