Preview:
Horatio and the team rush to a concert venue as pop superstar Phoenicks is set ablaze on stage amidst a pyrotechnics display. When pop star Phoenicks erupts into flames during a performance, her manager, Julian Diehl, has her whisked away by paramedics – despite the fact that it is clear she is already dead. Julian claims that he ordered the removal of the body to avoid any inconvenience caused by the press. “What you call inconvenience, I call obstruction,” says Horatio.
An examination of the charred remains shows that Phoenicks, whose real name is Phoebe Nichols, did not inhale any of the smoke caused by the fire. In fact, she had already stopped breathing when the fire broke out.Theorising that the fire could have been used to hide the real cause of death, the CSIs focus on the pyrotechnics, but it seems the display was legitimate. However, the make-up Phoebe was wearing could be key. The alcohol-based paint acted as an accelerant, ensuring the singer’s body was quickly consumed by the flames.
The cause of the fire is revealed when a fragment of copper wire is located on the body. The wire came from a stun gun charge, which ignited the make-up and stopped Phoebe’s heart. When cellphone footage recorded during the concert shows a young man stealing a bracelet from Phoebe, Ryan and Jesse bring him in for questioning. The young man, Robbie Ferguson, explains that he used to be part of Phoebe’s entourage, but was shut out after fame changed her. However, he denies owning a stun gun, and insists he would never hurt the singer.
